Description

ABB’s shipborne DC grid 5SHY3545L0010 solution plays a role as a platform for extending to fuel cells, because this technology is well compatible with a wider range of energy storage solutions. “We have received strong support from the ship owner in terms of technology promotion. Now we are turning to larger ships, such as cruise ships and ferries.”

Bogen pointed out that since 5SHY3545L0010 has fewer moving parts, the fuel cell has saved a lot of maintenance costs, but the first projects do not necessarily use hydrogen fuel. He envisioned a cruise hybrid solution that uses conventional fuels to provide propulsion power while providing lighting through fuel cells. “Fuel cells can also solve the lighting needs of ports. Cruise ship owners can directly carry zero emission power on the ship, which can omit the step of installing shore power.” Once fuel cells and fossil fuels keep abreast, the next step is to adopt pure fuel cell technology.
“The market is surging,=all kinds of technologies are in full bloom,” Bogen said. “We believe that 5SHY3545L0010, proton exchange membrane or PEM technology is the most promising and sustainable.” ABB’s own fuel cell projects involve market research, R&D and the participation of leading enterprises.
ABB believes that hydrogen is an excellent fuel cell solution, but Bogen acknowledges that hydrogen must achieve sustainable production to be truly called “green fuel”. Once solved, the advantages begin to emerge: “The efficiency of fuel cells is higher than that of internal combustion engines, and technology makes their energy more intensive than fossil fuels. Moreover, if you use renewable energy to produce hydrogen, the entire energy chain is clean.”
Bogen added that the shipbuilding industry has also learned a lot from the development of LNG as a fuel. “Just as large shipowners have successively set foot in the fields of LNG and infrastructure, so will they in the fields of fuel cells and hydrogen.”
One step at a time cannot lead to a thousand miles
Hydrogen treatment technology and infrastructure are also improving. ABB participated in the fuel cell project of Maranda scientific research ship, which aims to develop a mobile hydrogen energy storage container to improve the hydrogen supply problem for ship applications.
“Maranda will be put into operation from next year, and new construction and renovation projects will follow. At present, there are four or five commercial ship projects in progress, and there are three in Norway alone.” He said.
What impact will the steady development of fuel cells have on the whole society and the shipping industry?
“This could lead to dramatic changes,” Bogen said. “If hydrogen becomes an important fuel, it even means that the geopolitical map will change accordingly. If we no longer rely on oil, then oil exporting countries will lose their influence on the world, and oil companies may collapse. Because there is almost no threshold for hydrogen production.”
For the shipping industry, in addition to the environmental friendliness of marine hydrogen fuel, hydrogen transportation may also develop into a new business. “In general, in the case of hydrogen and fuel cells, shipping will be more environmentally friendly and attractive.”
At present, the European Union, Japan, the United States and China are all striving to promote the development of hydrogen fuel cell technology and promote it to all fields. Does this mean that hydrogen society has begun to take shape?
JosteinBogen’s answer is cautious and optimistic: “For ABB, the future is an electricity society. In this case, the most ideal ship is to use hydrogen electricity. This will enable us to organically combine batteries and fuel cells in the next 20-30 years to avoid the emission problems caused by fuel burning.”
The task is extremely arduous. He is convinced that the entire value chain needs to be mature and the rules and regulations related to ship application need to be further formulated. “But this is the trend in the future. It is already happening, and it is no longer an illusion.”
