With the development of PLC technology, the variety of PLC products is also increasing. Different models of PLCs have different structural forms, performance, capacity, instruction systems, programming methods, prices, etc., and their applicable occasions also have different focuses. Therefore, the reasonable selection of PLC is of great significance for improving the technical and economic indicators of PLC control systems. The selection of PLC should mainly be comprehensively considered from the aspects of PLC model, capacity, I/O module, power module, special function module, communication networking ability, etc. The basic principle for selecting PLC models is to strive for the best performance price ratio while meeting functional requirements and ensuring reliability and easy maintenance. When choosing, the main considerations are as follows:


(1) There are two reasonable structural types of PLC: integrated and modular. The average price of each I/O point in an integrated PLC is cheaper than that of a modular PLC, and its volume is relatively small. It is generally used in small control systems with relatively fixed system processes; The modular PLC has flexible and convenient function expansion, with a wide range of options in terms of I/O points, the ratio of input points to output points, and the types of I/O modules. It is also easy to maintain and is generally suitable for more complex control systems.

(2) The installation method of PLC system can be divided into centralized, remote I/O, and distributed with multiple PLCs connected. Centralized does not require the installation of remote I/O hardware to drive, resulting in fast system response and low cost; Remote I/O mode is suitable for large systems, with a wide range of device distribution. Remote I/O can be installed dispersedly near on-site devices with short connections, but additional drivers and remote I/O power supplies are required; The distributed networking of multiple PLCs is suitable for situations where multiple devices are independently controlled and interconnected. Small PLCs can be selected, but additional communication modules are necessary.

(3) The corresponding functional requirements are generally small (low-end) PLCs with logic operation, timing, counting, and other functions, which can be met for equipment that only requires on-off control. For systems with switch based control and a small amount of analog control, an enhanced low-end PLC with A/D and D/A conversion units, as well as addition and subtraction arithmetic operations and data transmission functions, can be selected.

(4) Response speed requirements: PLC is a universal controller designed for industrial automation, and the response speed of different grades of PLCs can generally meet the needs of their application range. If you want to use a PLC across different ranges, or if certain functions or signals have special speed requirements, you should carefully consider the response speed of the PLC. You can choose a PLC with high-speed I/O processing function, or a PLC with fast response module and interrupt input module.

(5) The requirements for system reliability can be met for the reliability of general system PLCs. For systems with high reliability requirements, consideration should be given to whether to use redundant systems or hot standby systems.

(6) Try to unify the model as much as possible for a single enterprise, and strive to achieve uniformity in the PLC model. Mainly considering the following three aspects:
1) The model is unified, and its modules can be used as backup for each other, facilitating the procurement and management of spare parts.
2) The model is unified, with similar functions and usage methods, which is conducive to the training of technical personnel and the improvement of technical level.
3) The model is unified, its external devices are universal, resources can be shared, and it is easy to communicate with the network. After being equipped with an upper computer, it is easy to form a multi-level distributed control system.
