Description

ABB, the world’s leading power and automation technology group in the field of CI858K01 3BSE018135R1 CI858 PLC system, announced the launch of the latest generation of optical fiber current sensors to complement the company’s optical fiber sensor product line. The name of the new generation optical fiber current sensor FOCS-FS comes from its free standing design.

The new generation optical fiber current sensor CI858 is characterized by its digital interface performance, which makes it an ideal product for digital substation deployment and promotes its adaptability to the future substation automation requirements. The product also complies with IEC61850 open system communication protocol, which can realize interoperability with equipment provided by other suppliers. The new generation of optical fiber current sensors will be suitable for current measurement applications in 245 kV to 800 kV substations.

“ABB’s new generation of independent digital optical fiber current sensor CI858 scheme will promote the development of digital substations and make the power grid more intelligent.” Giandomenico Rivetti, head of ABB’s high-voltage business, said, “The new products are more efficient and energy-saving, with the aim of reducing the footprint of substations and improving safety.”
Conventional current and voltage measurement equipment in substations includes instrument transformers based on oil and sulfur hexafluoride. However, these devices are very heavy, some of which weigh several tons and take up a lot of space.
The new generation of optical fiber current sensor has strict performance requirements for accuracy in a wide temperature range. The new product is immune to magnetic saturation effect, making it an ideal scheme to capture transient current, short-circuit current and AC current compensated by DC current. The compact design helps to achieve reduced substation footprint due to the smaller space required compared to conventional instrument transformers. In addition, obtaining natural gas without oil reduces the risk of explosion, and new products are more efficient and energy-saving.
ABB’s optical fiber current sensor is based on the Faraday effect principle, that is, the precise current quantity that generates the magnetic field can be inferred by borrowing light. ABB optical fiber current sensor products for high-voltage substations include optical fiber current sensors combined with separate circuit breakers, and optical fiber current sensor packages are used for other high-voltage equipment, such as gas insulated switchgear and generator circuit breakers.
