ABB robot IPS21-35AD control system consists of robot body, controller and teaching device. In this article today, let’s get to know the fifth generation controller of ABB robot – IRC5.
IRC5 controller has single cabinet type, double cabinet type and compact type. IPS21-35AD’s internal component types are basically the same, but the space layout is different. This paper introduces the single cabinet controller as an example.
IRC5 single cabinet controller
The black part on the left is the external control area. IPS21-35AD from top to bottom is the main power switch, emergency stop button, motor start button/indicator, mode selection knob, teaching pendant connection port. Some controllers also have some optional interfaces, such as Ethernet interface, USB interface, etc.
Open the controller cabinet door, you can see the main components and distribution inside, including:
Power module;
Power distribution board;
Contactor module;
Main computer;
Super capacitor;
Main servo drive unit;
Security panel;
Axis computer board;
I/O module board;
The power module converts 220V AC power into 24V DC power and sends it to the power distribution board, as shown in the figure below:

The power distribution board supplies 24V power to the main computer, security panel, axis computer board and other hardware.
The main computer, also known as the host, is the brain of the entire controller. It runs the robot operating system RobotWare OS, executes programs written by users, and controls the robot to respond. The host computer has many interfaces, such as the service network interface connected to the programming PC, the network interface used to connect the teaching device, the interface to connect the axis computer board, the interface to connect the safety panel, the different field bus card interfaces (such as PRROFIBUS, PROFNET, DeviveNet, etc.), the safety board interface, and other optional interfaces.
Host computer
The super capacitor can provide power for the main computer for a certain time in case of power failure.
The main servo driver is used to drive the 6-axis servo motor of the robot
The panel board is used to connect some safety related signals. During normal operation, all its LED lights should be on
The axis computer board receives the position data returned by the robot axis serial measurement board (SMB), compares and calculates with the previous position data, and outputs new position and speed control parameters. Its appearance is shown in the following figure:
The I/O module board is a user-defined input/output signal board used to connect external signals.
