Description

If someone engaged in PLC technical support wants to start system debugging on site, whether it is for OEM customers or for the integration of a process control system, they must make some preparations in advance. Just like a “donkey friend” who needs to change their shoes, bring water and food, and prepare some personal protective equipment for outdoor use before traveling, and if they are staying overnight, they also need tents, flashlights, etc. As a professional PLC technical support engineer, there are many things to prepare.
Firstly, you need to arrange your own itinerary plan, clothing, food, housing, and transportation. If accommodation is needed, then how to book a flight ticket, hotel (hotel, guesthouse) will not be discussed here. If the time is long (such as over a month), in order to save money, it is necessary to consider renting a house locally, especially when the departure is for a group rather than just one person. Clothing, food, housing, and transportation are the same issues as regular travel, although their impact on completing tasks is not inferior to your professional level. Imagine what kind of impact a week of diarrhea caused by food poisoning would have on work when you arrived at the scene, and you know what to prepare. Usually, the administrative department of an experienced automation company will consider these situations for engineers, but as engineers, it is important to confirm and see if everything has been arranged.

After settling in, prepare your own tools. As an on-site debugging engineer for PLC, I don’t need many debugging tools. However, a screwdriver and a multimeter are still essential. In addition, when conducting system joint debugging with on-site instrument sensors, a signal generator is also required to simulate the signal of the on-site instrument to ensure that the on-site signal is intact when a problem occurs. Also, a sturdy laptop is a necessary tool for programming and debugging. Although you can require users to prepare these tools, as a professional PLC engineer, if you don’t even have these tools, users will doubt your professional level. If necessary, you can propose other instruments and meters to the company or customers to prepare in advance, such as oscilloscopes, regulated power supplies, etc. After all, these less versatile instruments are usually not portable or spare.

There are some small things that are often overlooked that will definitely be useful when you prepare them. For example, electrical tape, heat shrink tubing, lighters (if you smoke, you naturally have them), cable ties, and if the on-site wiring is already completed, prepare some cables that are the same as the signal wires, as well as some screws to fix the base. You may doubt what these are for. Believe me, bringing these with you may only cost a few cents, but upon arrival at the scene, it may save you a day or even a few days, especially when you are in a remote mountainous area. Although the manufacturer has screws at the time of shipment, anything can happen on site. If there are not enough screws (which is inevitable every time), it can cause many problems.

In addition to the above, these are the spare parts that will be included in this debugging. Although the on-site inventory may already consider the issue of spare parts, it is best to carry some spare parts with you in case of emergencies. Firstly, there are the PLC substrates (some of which become racks), power supplies, and CPU modules, as these are the foundation for a PLC to work. If there is only one system on site, then these modules are only one. If there is no backup, in case of a malfunction, all your work must be stopped. Therefore, it is best to bring a set with you.

If there is only one other I/O module and communication module on site, you should consider bringing one more. For those modules that already have two or more on site, you don’t need to consider bringing them yourself.
