The relay has fast and slow analog input rates of change. The fast rate of change measures over the last one

IS200TRTDH1D minute interval and detects a rapid increase or decrease in the input quantity. The slow rate of change mea

sures over the last one hour interval and detects the long term trend of the input quantity. A positive rate indi

cates an increasing analog input and a negative rate indicates a decreasing analog input.

The IS200TRTDH1D fast (slow) analog input rate of change is calculated as follows. Every second (minute) the present analog

input reading is captured and a new rate of change calculated for the previous minute (hour). The rate is calcu

lated using the previous sixty analog input readings and the ‘Least Squares Approximation’ method that gener

ates an equation for the best line through the sample points as shown below. The rate of change is equal to the

slope of this line which is a stable quantity not unduly affected by noise or fluctuations from the input.

TER SELECTIONS on page 13–25. As shown in the last column, there are three types of channels, desig

nated A, B and C. The characteristic of the type A channel is that the range of the parameter extends from a

minimum of 0 units. The characteristic of the type B channel is that the range of the parameter is between def

inite boundaries. The characteristic of the type C channel is that the parameter includes direction of flow.

A significant overfrequency condition, likely caused by a breaker opening and disconnecting load from a partic

ular generation location, can be detected and used to quickly ramp the turbine speed back to normal. If this is

not done, the over speed can lead to a turbine trip, which would then subsequently require a turbine start up

before restoring the system. If the overfrequency turbine ramp down is successful, the system restoration can

be much quicker. The overfrequency monitoring feature of the relay can be used for this purpose at a generat

ing location.

The overfrequency feature is inhibited from operating unless the phase A voltage is above 30% of nominal.

When the supply source is energized, the overfrequency delay timer will only be allowed to time when the 30%

threshold is exceeded and the frequency is above the programmed pickup level. In the same way, when an

overfrequency condition starts the overfrequency delay timer and the phase A voltage falls below the 30%

threshold before the timer has expired, the element will reset without operating.
