Description
Before the emergence of CNC machine tools, sequential control technology had been widely applied in industrial production. The working process of many mechanical equipment requires following certain steps or sequences. Sequential control is a control method that uses the operating status and time of mechanical equipment as a basis to operate in a predetermined sequence of actions.
There are two main types of sequential control devices (or systems) used in CNC machine tools. One is the traditional “Relay Logic Circuit”, abbreviated as RLC (Relay Logic Circuit). Another type is a “programmable controller”, which is a PLC.
RLC is a circuit that connects electromechanical controllers such as relays, contactors, buttons, switches, etc. with wires to achieve specified sequential control functions. In practical applications, RLC has some insurmountable shortcomings. For example, it can only solve simple logic operations of switch values, as well as limited functional controls such as timing and counting, making it difficult to achieve complex logic operations, arithmetic operations, data processing, and many special control functions required by CNC machine tools. Modifying control logic requires adding or removing control components and rewiring, with a long installation and adjustment cycle and a large workload; Relays, contactors, and other devices have a large volume, and each device has limited working contacts. When there are many controlled objects in the machine tool or the control action sequence is complex, a large number of devices need to be used, resulting in a large volume, high power consumption, and poor reliability of the entire RLC. Due to the aforementioned drawbacks, RLC can only be used for general industrial equipment and CNC lathes, CNC drilling machines, CNC boring machines, and other CNC machine tools with relatively simple control logic.
